The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is an ancient Chinese holiday that falls on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. The origins of the Dragon Boat Festival date back over 2,000 years and are steeped in legend and folklore. One popular legend surrounding the festival is the story of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and statesman from the Warring States period. Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River as a protest against corruption and injustice, and it is believed that people raced dragon boats and threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating his body.
